CHAPTER 13

I felt safe in my car with the windows rolled all the way up. It was a relief to remove the annoying hat. I pressed my pedal to the metal on the first straight section of road I came to, leaving my home, and all the chaos that had built up there over the morning, behind me.

To get to Outlook Mesa I’d have to travel the length of the valley as if I was heading to Natural Junction. Then I’d hook left on a narrow back road that brought sightseers up to the very top of the mesas. These were flat areas on top of the cliffs surrounding the valleys. I’d been up there before, once with Davis and Clara and another time with Myles, to watch the sunset or simply take in the view. This visit to the scenic mesa tops did not promise to be nearly as enjoyable. My palms sweat every time I thought about telling Myles about his mother’s run in with a drugged dart.

Though I passed a dozen heifers, none had ambled into the road so I kept up my speed. The sandy brown or black cows munched grass or lapped up water from drinking stations. I scanned the sky now and then, but the only flying objects I saw were birds: ravens, bluebirds, doves.

The orange and red sandstone cliff walls of the valley receded and when I reached a T in the road, I took a left. A quarter mile later I spotted a sign for “Outlook Mesa Road” on my left, and I took the turn. The dirt road wound through rocky outcroppings at a steep incline.

Diva lolled in the cup holder, jiggling slightly due to the divots in the road. She’d regaled me with a dozen high-energy pop songs thus far, to “de-stress” as she put it, and the poor thing had wiped herself right out. Now she pressed the back of one wingtip to her brow. “It’s no use. Even music can’t soothe my soul. I keep thinking about Prince Jasper.”

I frowned at the thought of Jasper, and gripped the wheel tighter as I navigated a sharp turn. “He’s not a prince any more.”

“Do you really think he’s trying for a comeback… from his dungeon cell?”

“I wouldn’t put it past him,” I said. “He wants to be king of the vampires. He hates his father more than he hates me. Now that he’s locked up, he has all day and night to marinate in revenge plots.”

“Oh, woe! Woe is—”

“Please,” I said, glancing over at her.

“We’ve stumbled upon a dark, dark plot, Lexi!” She’d abandoned her current favorite monolog, “woe is me,” but the high drama continued. “A conspiracy of grand proportions! One day there may be a documentary made up about Jasper’s quest for power, and you and I will have leading roles”

“Let’s stay calm and think this through. We know that Jasper is using this pixie to do his bidding. She’s supposed to deliver two messages in addition to offing me.
